Hitting Analysis

This is a breakdown of the player's hits and outs by location and type of hit. This can document, for example, that players who play in Fenway Park get lots of doubles on fly balls to left, whereas hitters in other parks rarely hit doubles on fly balls to left. This will build our understanding of park effects from a broader perspective, rather than just looking at category results. It gives us insight in 'shifts' and less radical defensive alignments. It gives us an analytical basis to discuss the David Ortiz/Jim Thome/Barry Bonds shift.

Note: The calculation for "Average" in the chart is not Hits divided by (Hits plus Outs). It's Hits divided by (Hits plus Outs minus Sacrifice Hits minus Sacrifice Flies). Sac hits and flies are not shown.
